The following bullets (Y304-Y312) are what are referred to as the .52 Columbia Arsenal Sharps. Upon first glance these may be appear to be a regular .52 Sharps with an uncut sprue. However, there may be more to the story than meets the eye. The majority of these bullets were recovered from the Congaree River in South Carolina many many years ago. It is thought that perhaps these bullets were stockpiled in the arsenal. Maybe the sprues were to be removed at a later date? No one knows why they were never removed. These bullets may have had the sprue left on them in order to affix a paper cartridge to the bullet like a regular tie ring Sharps. One thing that is important to note is that these bullets are found in the low country of South Carolina. They appear to have been issued with some sort of cartridge attached. The following bullets show the differences in the ones that came from the dump site. Please note that some appear to have a very small conical cavity on the end of the sprue. This is created when the lead is poured and begins to cool. I listed these all at once you can see the subtle differences. It isn't that often that you get to see this many together at once.

Y247    Complete Set of Williams Cleaners Types I, II, and III.

Complete excavated set of Williams Cleaner bullets. These bullet were issued approximately every 15 rounds. The purpose of these bullets was to scrape the build up of gun powder (fouling) from the inside of the bore. Type I had a zinc disk attached to a post. Types II and III had zinc disks between the bullet and the lower disk. Upon firing the lower disk would push forward causing the zinc disk to expand outward and clean the fouling from the inside of the barrel. This was necessary in order to prevent the soldiers from constantly breaking down their entire weapon to clean the bore.

Y94    Crescent Case Shot Ball

These are often recovered from skirmish sites and battlefields where artillery shells were exploding. People often think that these pieces hit a tree or other round object. This crescent shape is produced when an artillery shells matrix is drilled out in order for the powder charge to go into the shell. Some of the case shot ball is removed via a drill bit so that the powder charge tube can be inserted in the hole.

Y74    Copper Vessel for Explosive Gardiner Bullet or Musket Shell

This small acorn shaped vessel held the explosive charge and was integrally cast into the bullet/shell. There was a small hole in the base which was attached to the nozzle. Upon firing, the powder would burn down through the nozzle and into the chamber of the copper vessel causing the bullet or musket shell to explode. This particular one has a small crack but is stable

Y37    Extracted .44 Elam O. Potter Bullet

These differ from the .44 Colt Dragoon bullet. They are just a little shorter. This is an example of an extracted revolver bullet. If a bullet were to misfire it had to be removed from the cylinder. Because the cylinders were only open on one end, the bullets had to be extracted from the nose. Soldiers would place the tool into the open chamber and slide it along the edge between the bullet and the inside of the cylinder. Once the tool was in as far as it could go the soldier would pull on the tool creating leverage and putting pressure on the bullet. The tool would dig its way into the bullet and it could then be removed. The soldier tried three times on this particular one.
